How do I talk to my aging parents about moving without upsetting them?
Lead with a question that allows them to keep control. “Would life be easier if you didn’t have to deal with these stairs?” Bring it up in a low-pressure conversation when everyone is having a good day. If the conversation isn’t being received well, try another day or consider an outside, third party to have the conversation.
How do I know when it’s time for my parents to downsize?
Watch for the real signs, skipped home maintenance, recents falls or health scares, they are isolating in the home, they are struggling with daily living activities. Remember, it’s not about an age. Plenty of 80 year-olds can handle the stairs with ease while a 68 year old is ready to simplify.
My parents refuse to move. What do I do?
Rather than pushing them to move like a broken record, ask them “What scares you about moving?” It is usually not the house or moving but the fear of losing control, losing the memories the house brings back, loss of independence, not having visitors (that one is BIG). Bring a neutral professional like a Certified Senior Housing Professional, move manager, a doctor, to help with the conversation. Sometimes hearing it from someone else changes everything.
Should we sell the house before or after my parents pass away?
Selling after (through inheritance) is almost always better in terms of taxes but homes that sit empty for long periods of time often start to deteriorate, causing them to lose value. Talk to your CPA or attorney and determine the best decision for you and your family.
Do I need a senior move manager?
A senior move manager is worth their weight in gold! They are a great option to help things move smoothly and help the senior to truly determine what can stay and what can go. I personally always recommend one.
