About Assisted Living
Senior Living & Real Estate — Housing and care options for every stage
Read more about Assisted LivingShow less
When is it time for assisted living? Usually when daily tasks — bathing, dressing, medications, meals — become more than someone can safely manage alone, but they don't need full nursing care. Assisted living communities provide housing with that daily support, alongside social activities and around-the-clock staff. It's one of the biggest decisions a family makes, usually while emotions are high and time feels short.
The right community feels different for every family, which is why the visit matters more than the brochure. Eat a meal there. Come unannounced a second time. Talk to residents, not just the tour guide. Ask about staff turnover, what happens when care needs increase, and exactly what the monthly fee does and doesn't include — move-in fees, care levels, and rate increases are where surprises live.
Every community listed here has been background-checked. In Texas, assisted living facilities are licensed by Health and Human Services — ask any community for their license and survey history; the good ones offer it before you ask.
Common Questions
What's the difference between assisted living and a nursing home?
Assisted living helps with daily activities (bathing, dressing, meds) for people who are mostly independent. A nursing home (skilled nursing) provides round-the-clock medical care for people with serious health needs. Assisted living is a residence; a nursing home is medical.
How much does assisted living cost, and does Medicare pay?
Costs vary widely by location and care level. Medicare does not cover assisted living room and board. Some long-term care insurance and, for eligible low-income seniors, Medicaid waivers may help.
What should I look for when touring?
Visit more than once, including unannounced. Eat a meal, watch how staff treat residents, ask about staff turnover and ratios, and get in writing exactly what the fee covers and what triggers a price increase.
What happens if my parent's needs increase?
Ask before choosing. Some communities offer higher care levels or memory care on-site; others require a move. Knowing the path avoids a second wrenching transition later.
