Insurance decisions made in a rush, or under pressure from an unsolicited call, can cost thousands and limit your choices for years. This category covers Medicare plans and advisors, Medicare Advantage and Medigap, long-term care insurance, life and final expense insurance, property and casualty coverage, and help navigating VA and other benefit programs.

Medicare basics. Original Medicare with a Medigap policy generally lets you see any provider who accepts Medicare, with predictable out-of-pocket costs. Medicare Advantage bundles coverage through a private plan, often with extra benefits and a network you must stay inside. Both are legitimate. The right answer depends on your health, your doctors, your travel, and your budget — not on whichever plan a caller is selling this week.

Timing matters. There are enrollment windows, and some Medigap protections are strongest when you first become eligible. Switching later can mean medical underwriting. An advisor who explains those windows clearly is doing their job; one who rushes you past them is not.

What Medicare will never do. Medicare will not call unexpectedly asking for your number, will not offer free equipment in exchange for your ID, and will not ask for banking details by phone. If that call comes, hang up and call 1-800-MEDICARE yourself.

Common Questions

What's the difference between Medicare and Medicaid?

Medicare is federal health insurance for people 65+ (regardless of income). Medicaid is need-based assistance for those with limited income and assets, and it can help pay for long-term care Medicare doesn't cover. Some people qualify for both.

When can I enroll in or change Medicare plans?

At 65 (your Initial Enrollment Period) and each fall during Annual Enrollment (Oct 15–Dec 7). Missing your initial window can mean lifelong penalties, so don't wait.

Do I have to pay an insurance advisor?

Usually no — independent Medicare and insurance advisors are typically paid by the carriers, so their help is free to you. Ask whether they're independent (many carriers) or captive (one company).

How do I avoid insurance scams?

Medicare and Social Security never call you unsolicited asking for your number or payment. Never give personal information to an unexpected caller — hang up and call the agency or a trusted advisor directly.
