Loneliness isn't a lesser problem than mobility — it's just quieter. Companion care covers non-medical, non-hands-on help: someone who comes by to talk, play cards, share a meal, run errands together, drive to appointments, or simply be in the house so no one is alone all day.
Families often start here, and often wish they'd started sooner. A companion notices things — that the mail piled up, that the fridge is empty, that Mom seems more confused this week — and those observations catch problems early. It's also the gentlest entry point when a parent bristles at "care": nobody's being bathed, nobody's being managed. Someone's just coming over.
Companion care does not include bathing, dressing, or medical tasks. If those are needed, look at Personal Care instead. Every provider here has been background-checked — which matters especially here, because this is someone alone in the house with your parent, building a real relationship.
Common Questions
What does a companion caregiver do?
Non-medical help and company — conversation, meals together, games, errands, rides to appointments, and simply being present so someone isn't alone all day. No bathing, dressing, or medical tasks.
What's the difference between companion care and personal care?
Companion care is social and non-hands-on. Personal care adds hands-on help with bathing, dressing, and mobility. If those are needed, look at Personal Care instead.
How much does companion care cost?
Usually hourly, and generally less than hands-on personal care since it's non-medical. Rates vary by area and hours; ask about minimums per visit.
Is companion care covered by insurance?
Usually not by Medicare, since it's non-medical. Long-term care insurance or veterans' benefits may help. Many families pay privately for the peace of mind it brings.
